In many coastal regions beach nourishments are carried out as “environmentally friendly” alternative to hard coastal protection structures. However, the extraction, transport and deposition of sediment can have (long-term) impacts on the coastal environment, which are often not completely understood. Subsequently, these impacts are underestimated in beach nourishment design and practice, leading to an insufficient implementation of the ecosystem approach to coastal management. In a first step towards a comprehensive strategy for more sustainable beach nourishments this study compares the current nourishment practice in selected countries worldwide, especially regarding the consideration and monitoring of environmental impacts.
