Vegetated shorelines can provide a coastal defence function due to their ability to dissipate wave energy. In order for this to be recognised and utilised in coastal planning it’s important to be able to predict this function spatially and over a range of wave conditions. Here, we modify the existing vegetation module in the SWAN wave model by allowing the drag coefficient to vary with ambient wave conditions and spatially varying the vegetation height. Once calibrated, we show the modified model gives an improved prediction of wave dissipation over a range of sites on the East Coast of the UK.
