This work presents a new parameter (modified Iribarren number, Ir*) to quantify several properties of the wave-breakwater interaction. The parameter is a actualization of Iribarren number (Ir), whereby the slope angle is substituted by the scattering parameter, Aeq/L2, where Aeq is the porous area per unit section under the mean water level. The scattering parameter controls the averaged transformation of the wave inside the porous section. It is concluded that Ir* is a good indicator of many overall properties involved in the design and performance of breakwaters, and helps to approach to full similarity under wave reflective-breaking conditions.
