The objective of this interdisciplinary research is to characterize the temporal and spatial variability of coastal foredune recovery following major storm events. Morphometrics relevant for parameterizing vulnerability to erosion and overtopping were extracted from airborne lidar surveys to assess impacts of Hurricane Matthew in Cape Lookout National Seashore prior to recovery. Post-storm in-situ data (geomorphological and ecological) were collected in 2016 and 2017 to evaluate dune recovery. These data along with environmental measurements were incorporated into the coupled, numerical modeling framework Windsurf, which combines the process-based models XBeach, Coastal Dune Model, and Aeolis, to simulate evolution of the coastal profile.
