The paper presents a numerical study of the interaction between irregular waves and a novel non-conventional breakwater integrated with an overtopping device, denominated OBREC. A two-dimensional numerical model, based on the Volume-Averaged Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes (VARANS) equations, named IH2VOF, is used in the analysis. The results are calibrated and validated against the experimental data in model scale, reaching a very good agreement. Results show how the numerical model can be used as a valid auxiliary tool during the different design steps of not only traditional coastal structures, but also breakwaters with non-conventional geometry such as the OBREC device.
