USACE deployed the Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technical Center of Expertise (JALBTCX) for regional-scale post-storm damage assessments after hurricane impacts in 2004, 2005, 2008, 2012, and 2016. FEMA deployed the JALBTCX in 2005 and 2017. Large sections of coastline are rapidly surveyed, and quick-response data products developed. This includes coastal change datasets delivered within 5 days of survey collection. In addition, JALBTCX aircraft operate from outside the immediate storm impact area, reducing risk to personnel and use of limited resources. The technology JALBTCX deploys, the Coastal Zone Mapping and Imaging Lidar (CZMIL) is the third generation system developed by ERDC.
