This study focus on the use of the hydro-geo-morphodynamic model “XBeach” of Roelvink et al. (2009) in modelling together the breaching of coastal barriers and induced inundation. Moreover, it highlights the coupling of an improved code of XBeach with the SEAWAT model of USGS to assess the environmental consequences of breach-induced vertical saltwater intrusion. In this context, the hydro-geo-morphodynamic processes associated with breaching of coastal barriers are addressed. Moreover, essential improvements to extend the scope of XBeach from the surface modelling of the nearshore hydro-morphodynamics and subsequent flooding to the subsurface modelling of SWI are highlighted.
