USACE New England District (NAE) completed a Final Dredged Material Management Plan (DMMP) for Long Island Sound. NAE investigated over 50 Federal Navigation Projects (31 Connecticut, 17 New York, and four Rhode Island). Placement of dredged material from harbors in and around the Sound is a contentious issue. The DMMP recommended the creation and continuation of a Regional Dredge Team (RDT) to facilitate working out differences. A collaborative RDT should provide information, options for evaluations/decision-making, and applications for approval. Communication between agencies remains the greatest means of shared understanding and keeping our ports/harbors operational, coastal waters clean, and shorelines resilient.
