Overtopping of breakwaters, beach erosion, joint occurrence of storm surge with spring tide, resonance in ship mooring systems, etc., are examples of cases to be considered for design in coastal engineering. However this enumeration shows that these cases can imply one variable or several, concern environmental phenomena or loads on structures, be caused by extreme values or the combination of frequent ones. Despite this diversity, they are all meaningful as “something happening”: they are events. Hence we wish proposing a clarification of the concept of meteo-oceanic events to provide the engineers with a sound framework for determining extreme conditions.
