Due to restrictions imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on the height of levees at the end of runways, the San Francisco International Airport (SFIA) is investigating alternate forms of Sea Level Rise (SLR) protection at the end of it's runways. A coastal engineering analysis was performed to determine the 1% annual chance total water level (stillwater level + wave runup). This water level was paired with SLR projections for San Francisco Bay to develop strategies for protecting the runway ends from short and long-term SLR without raising the elevation of the levees.
