This study proposes a sink term for non-linear shallow water equation (NLSW) models, describing the energy losses due to macro-roughness elements (MRE). The sink term was derived with the help of a well-validated CFD model, which was used to run a test matrix of more than 20 simulations. Dimensional analyses and mult-regression analyses were performed, leading to sink terms, which are constructed from flow parameters and the MRE parameters density, height, shape and arrangement of the MRE, which can be derived from geodata processing. The sink terms were implemented in the NLSW model COMCOT and compared with experimental data.
