In this paper, we demonstrate that the normalized runup heights for breaking solitary waves can be characterized by a single surf parameter, which is theoretically defined by a wave breaking criterion. Existing laboratory data are collected and summarized. Breaking waves include surging, plunging and spilling breakers. To enhance the range of surf parameters for breaking solitary waves, new laboratory experiments were performed in a large-scale wave flume with a 1/100 slope. Plotting all runup data against the surf parameter, they collapse into a trend, which can be described by a best-fit curve.
