The plurality of littoral hazards (erosion and flooding) and of protection types (natural features and human-made structures) makes the estimation of protection costs much more complex than in the fluvial field. To help the calculation of present global cost for coastal projects, a methodology based on costs observed on recent interventions was specifically developed in France. Beyond the numerical values that were produced and which have a sense only in the economic context of a country, the underlying principles and methods used in France appear applicable also in other countries, which can help saving time and intellectual resources.
