Stokes drift plays an important role in the upper ocean current system. However, generally, the depth profile is estimated using a regular wave approximation. Here, we introduce a full directional spectra approximation for use in a coupled ocean-wave model in order to estimate Stokes drift effects for random waves. After validation of the approximation theoretically and empirically, coastal current simulations were carried out with and without random wave effects. Differences in current were found in coastal areas where there are large variations in a frequency parameter. This indicates the importance of considering random wave effects when computing Stokes drift effects.
