The 16 kilometer (km) beach along Nags Head (North Carolina, USA) has sustained chronic erosion over the past 50 years. In 2011, 3.5 million cubic meters (m3) of beach-quality sand was dredged from offshore and placed along the oceanfront. The planned 3 million cubic meters renourishment project is focused on restoring sand losses since 2011 and particularly after Hurricane Matthew, while improving performance at the most rapidly eroding section of beach. Delft3D was used to evaluate the impact of offshore dredging on longshore sediment transport, and to simulate alternative fill configurations to increase the renourishment interval and improve project longevity.
