Headlands bays tend to evolve to a stable beach planshape and several empirical bay shape equations have been derived to fit to the shoreline of headland bays. One of the most widely adopted empirical equations is the Parabolic Bay Shape Equation(PBSE). The main difficulty with the application of the PBSE is locating the downcoast control point. A relationship linking the Hyperbolic Tangent Equation to a wave diffraction point was determined through the assessment of 46 beaches around Spain and North Africa. This eliminated the requirement of placing the downcoast control point and relies instead on defining a minimum beach width.
