Coastal Design Tools
As coastal development, understanding of coastal hazards and engineering capability have increased over time, implementation of risk reduction measures has become standard to mitigate impacts of inundation, flooding and erosion on coastal communities. Despite the evident necessity of risk management, there remains a substantial “implementation gap” defined as the ratio between executed and abandoned projects or policies. To analyse drivers of this gap, we utilize fuzzy cognitive mapping techniques to construct visual and quantified maps representing conceptualization, engagement, and execution processes. The resulting map framework will be tested and calibrated with case studies from New Zealand and the United States.
