Assessing environmental impacts of human interventions in estuaries has become increasingly important. This contribution focusses on the mechanisms of sediment transport in the Weser estuary and discusses possible impacts of a channel deepening on those mechanisms. Analysis of field data and simulation results from a sediment transport model reveal that both local and global sediment transport mechanisms are responsible for immediate and long-term responses of the system to a channel deepening. Residual current and sediment transport patterns may help to reveal indications for long-term changes.
