Wave and Vegetation Interaction
Mangrove forests exist in intertidal areas of tropical zones and most are characterised by their complex root systems, which attenuates flow energy. Rhizophora species represents approximately 90% of the world mangrove distribution. Rhizophora plants are characterised by their aerial roots, which form a network above the substrate. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the hydrodynamics within these complex root systems, and the forces exerted by the flow on the tree elements. The large-scale experiments presented here joint to numerical simulations aims to better characterise flow energy dissipation provided by these ecosystems and the forces exerted on the trees.
