Storm Erosion Index (SEI) (Miller & Livermont, 2008) evaluates a storm’s erosion potential based on a combination of storm wave heights, water levels, and duration, thus enabling the comparison of tropical and extratropical storms. Here, SEI is applied to the coast of New Jersey to develop a regional climatology using a 34-year record. Results of the climatology replicate the observed spatial variation in the impacts of individual storms. Application of the developed dataset and SEI in real time forecasting will enable approaching storms, and the associated impacts, to be quantified more appropriately.
