The tidal propagation along the Qiantang Estuary has been investigated by a combination of analytical framework and mathematical modelling. The findings show that the non-linear bed friction and the effects of hyperconcentration-related drag reduction are very important for accurate analytical prediction of the tidal ranges in such hyperconcentrated estuarine environments. The extended application of an empirical bed friction formula with sediment effects for the Yellow River to the Qiantang Estuary seems successful in physically reflecting the small bed friction in this estuary. The good agreement of the analytical and numerical tidal ranges against the observations demonstrates the model’s ability.
