A novel approach is proposed for analyzing ship traffic based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. The approach provides a way to obtain more accurate estimates of traffic patterns in narrow channels with bends by eliminating the “straight-line” linear interpolation that is often assumed between successive AIS records. Linear interpolation biases traffic patterns to the inside of each bend, often producing unrealistic traffic maps. The method proposed removes the bias toward the inside of bends. This paper includes an illustration of the method with synthetic data for validation, along with an example applied to real world data.
