A new long-term satellite data set spanning approximately 30 years were used to estimate extreme wind speed and extreme significant wave height on a global scale. Two traditional methods for extreme value estimates, initial distribution method (IDM) and peaks-over-threshold (POT), were applied to determine the return levels for a 100-yr. return period. The presentation will compare such estimates with long-term buoy data and numerical model reanalysis, and examine the limitation of the satellite data.
