The failure behavior of quay walls in port areas is one of the critical elements governing flood risk along the Belgian coast due to extreme storm surges. Little knowledge is available today on the landward non-impulsive wave overtopping over a broad quay, in some cases combined with overflow, and a flood wall at large distance (>50-100 m) from the front quay wall edge.
Using CFD modeling in OpenFOAM, the flow processes are analyzed in detail and validated with the EurOtop wave overtopping formula and physical scale model tests.
