SAT-B05 - Depth of Perception—The Design Acumen of Three ASLA Design Medalists

Three ASLA Design Medal recipients will pull back the curtain to reveal a rare glimpse into their very diverse career paths. Using project images and anecdotes, each will discuss the design acumen employed, against all odds, in transforming concepts into career defining, iconic projects.

Attendees are invited to continue the conversation with panelists immediately following the presentation in the ASLA EXPO.

Thomas Balsley, FASLA

Tom Balsley, FASLA is a renowned designer whose NYC-based practice was founded in 1970 as Thomas Balsley Associates (now SWA/Balsley) and is best known for its fusion of landscape and urbanism in award-winning urban parks, plazas and waterfronts throughout the U.S. and abroad.
His published work, lectures, teaching and awards demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the quality of urban life as was recognized by the naming of Balsley Park in Manhattan, the 2015 ASLA Design Medal and the ORO Editions monograph, “Thomas Balsley: Uncommon Ground”.

Andrea Cochran, FASLA

Founder and Principal
Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture

Andrea Cochran, FASLA is founder and principal of San Francisco-based Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture and has been practicing landscape architecture in the Bay Area for over thirty years. Her firm is internationally recognized and is frequently featured in a variety of design publications as well as the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Ms. Cochran’s work has garnered numerous design awards, most notably the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award in Landscape Architecture and the American Society of Landscape Architects’ Design Medal in 2014. A monograph of her firm’s work was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2009.

Gary Hilderbrand, FASLA

Reed Hilderbrand

Gary Hilderbrand, the 2017 winner of the American Society of Landscape Architects Design Medal, is principal of Reed Hilderbrand LLC. He is also Professor in Practice at Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he has taught since 1990. Notable projects include Long Dock Park in Beacon, NY, the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA, and campus projects at Duke University, Yale, Harvard, and MIT. Reed Hilderbrand was recognized as ASLA’s 2013 Firm of the Year. Hilderbrand is a fellow of the American Academy in Rome, where he was Mercedes T. Bass Resident in Landscape Architecture for the fall of 2017.

Gina Ford, FASLA

Principal and Co-Founder
Agency Landscape + Planning

Gina Ford is a landscape architect, co-founder and principal of Agency Landscape + Planning. Underpinning her two decades of practice are a commitment to the design of public places and the perpetuation of the value of landscape architecture via teaching, writing and lecturing. Her work has received awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, the American Planning Association and the American Institute of Architects, among others. She is on the board of directors for the Cultural Landscape Foundation and was the recipient of the Harvard Graduate School of Design’s Charles Eliot Travelling Fellowship and Wellesley College’s Shaw Fellowship.
