Through the lens of evidence-based design, this project team considers how history, research data, and landscape management practices inform project trajectory. Their conversation will examine a series of case studies in which these aspects inspired everything from the early visioning process to highly prescriptive management specifications.

Larry Weaner Landscape Associates

Since founding Larry Weaner Landscape Associates in 1982, Larry Weaner has been widely recognized as a leader in the field of ecology-based landscape practice. He also founded New Directions in the American Landscape in 1990, a conference series dedicated to incorporating ecological science and cultural landscape practice into the art of landscape design. He has lectured widely throughout the US and his book, "Garden Revolution: How Our Landscapes Can Be a Source of Environmental Change" won and American Horticulture Society Book Award. AHS also awarded him their annual "Landscape Design Award" in 2021.

Darren Damone is an Associate Principal with Andropogon Associates with over 16 years of experience on a variety of public and private project types ranging from institutional, residential, education, and municipal. Darren’s focus has been on smaller scale projects that require the integration of sustainable ecological processes. His projects exhibit a keen awareness of the site, finely developed and crafted design details, and execution of best practices during construction. As a project manager, he forges strong working partnerships with the clients and stakeholders that result in successful project outcomes.

Katharine Griffiths

Avalon Park and Preserve

Katharine Griffiths is the director of Avalon Park and Preserve in Stony Brook, NY. Katharine has spent the last twenty years facilitating the design, construction and maintenance of the park. She has served on numerous village and community environmental boards and enjoys the challenge of balancing conservation efforts with economic and development needs. Originally from Canada, Katharine studied at the University of Western Ontario and Guelph University before accepting the position at Avalon Park.
