In atonement for America’s long history of marginalizing low-income and communities of color, the landscape designer’s role has expanded to incorporate social justice within engagement processes to create equitable spaces and avoid perpetuating unjust histories. How do we encourage the underserved to contribute to places that will serve them?

Alex Marchinski, Assoc. ASLA

Senior Landscape Designer
Stoss Landscape Urbanism

Alex Marchinski is a senior landscape designer at Stoss Landscape Urbanism. Alex holds a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture from Penn State University with a minor in Geography. At Stoss, Alex has focused on projects situated in neighborhoods that have undergone historical and systematic marginalization. Through community engagement and advocacy, these projects work to empower existing neighborhood leaders and design spaces that cater to local communities while having lasting city-wide impacts.

Jescelle Major, Assoc. ASLA, LEED GA

Landscape Designer
Mithun

Jescelle Major is currently a landscape designer at multidisciplinary firm Mithun. She holds a BS in Sustainability and the Built Environment from the University of Florida and a Master of Landscape Architecture from Louisiana State University. Her research and current professional design work have centered on urban scale change driven by environmental sensitivity, historic fabric and social justice. Jescelle worked alongside teams within City of Miami Beach Parks and Recreation and Planning at Denver Zoo. Jescelle served on the Seattle Design Commission and is now on the Arts Commission as a mayoral appointee focused on the Public Art Advisory Committee.

Matthew Mazzotta

Artist
Harvard University Graduate School of Design

Matthew Mazzotta works at the intersection of art, activism, and urbanism, focusing on the power of the built environment to shape our relationships and experiences. His community-specific public projects integrate new forms of social engagement into the built environment revealing how the spaces we travel through and spend our time living within have the potential to become distinct sites for intimate, radical, and meaningful exchanges. Mazzotta received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a Masters of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Program in Art, Culture and Technology, and a Harvard University Loeb Fellow.

Eric Williams

Founder & Creative Director
The Silver Room

Eric Williams is the founder and creative director of the Silver Room, an innovative retail, arts, education and community events space opened in 1997. The Silver Room intersects the worlds of fashion, music and visual art, and acts as a boutique, gallery, and community arts center. Williams is committed to creating spaces and curating events that strengthen communities and fuel positive economic impact. In his Loeb Fellowship at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Williams is focusing on conducting research to create a practical model based on The Silver Room’s success as a for-profit, people centered art and community enterprise.
