FS-001 - Historic Gardens of Northern Delaware: Early 20th Century duPont Estates

Visit distinguished duPont estates Winterthur and Nemours to see how each used creative design and horticulture techniques to maintain relevance and attract garden visitors. Learn the history of each site, walk the signature gardens, and explore conservation efforts in fountain renovations and adaptive reuse at the French formal garden at Nemours.

Anna Wik, ASLA, SITES AP

Assistant Professor
University of Delaware

Anna is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at University of Delaware and a registered landscape architect in Pennsylvania and Delaware. She has designed, documented, and managed construction of many landscape projects in the region, working with community and non-profit partners. Anna’s courses investigate the relationship between the practice of design and the built environment, and her design focus is on the urban landscape, the creation of equitable public space, and the impact of community partnerships. She is excited about the new professional degree program at UD, the Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture.

Lolly Tai, FASLA

Professor
Temple University

Lolly Tai has been a practitioner and educator for thirty years. During her career, she has worked on numerous award-winning projects of various scopes and scales. She is currently Professor of Landscape Architecture at Temple University. Her teaching focuses on landscape restoration, innovative green technologies, and best management practices. Her research concentration is on designing for children and she has authored two books: The Magic of Children’s Garden” and “Designing Outdoor Environments for Children.” Lolly is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and a recipient of the Bradford Williams Medal from the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Linda Eirhart

Director of Horticulture/ Senior Curator of Plants
Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library

Linda is the Director of Horticulture/Senior Curator of Plants at Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library. Linda and her staff are responsible for the horticultural care, design, and documentation of the Winterthur Garden. Their goal is to preserve the H. F. du Pont’s original design intent for the garden while enhancing seasonal display and plant collection. Over her career at Winterthur, she has been responsible for garden interpretation, plant records, and garden restoration and was on the design team for Enchanted Woods. Linda is the project manager for an IMLS grant to digitally map the garden and update the plant records.

Ken Darsney

Horticultural Supervisor
Nemours Estate

Ken Darsney is the Horticultural Supervisor for Nemours Estate, the former home of Alfred I. DuPont. Ken and his team oversee the care of the 200+-acre property, which ranges from large French-style formal gardens to native Brandywine woods. Nemours Estate is undergoing a massive shift in the visitor experience of the property, both in operations and interpretation, which brings many challenges and opportunities, both long-range and day-to-day. Prior to this position, Ken was the Horticultural Supervisor for the State of Delaware’s Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, overseeing the stewardship of landscapes of over 40 historic properties throughout the State.
