Landscape architects support “evidence-based” practice, but how often do designs, details, and specifications ignore current science or fail to follow best practices? This session will explore some of the myths and misconceptions of trees and planting soils and how research can find its way into practice.

Paul Josey is a principal and co-founder of Wolf | Josey Landscape Architects and has over 15 years of experience working on a diverse range of civic, academic, institutional projects. He has specific expertise in urban and campus design, tree preservation, soil design, construction, native plants and stormwater management.

His experience includes work on the Flight 93 National Memorial, Citygarden in St. Louis and various projects at the historic St. John's College in Annapolis, MD. Current projects include the District Wharf waterfront and Meridian Hill Redevelopment in Washington, D.C. as well as Carr's Hill at the University of Virginia.

Allison Harvey is a Senior Associate at The Office of James Burnett. Drawing on a foundation in physics/material science prior to Landscape Architecture, Allison is drawn to materiality, constructed systems, and best/next practices. With over ten years of professional experience within the disciplines of landscape architecture and architecture, Allison has served as project manager for multiple built projects, including the revitalization of the Fifth Avenue Plaza at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Carnegie Hall Roof Terrace in New York City, the Rotunda Landscape at the University of Virginia, and the Rodin Museum Gardens in Philadelphia, PA.
