Learn how NYC Parks, working with communities, sister agencies, and partners, is unifying park spaces with the neighborhoods they serve by reimagining entrances, edges, and park-adjacent spaces through its new Parks Without Borders initiative. Understand the challenges and opportunities and see a variety of innovative and thoughtful design solutions.

New York City Department of Parks & Recreation

Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP became Commissioner of NYC Parks in May 2014. Commissioner Silver is the immediate past president of the American Planning Association (APA). Mitchell is an award-winning planner with over 30 years of experience. He is internationally recognized for his leadership in the planning profession and his contributions to contemporary planning issues. As Parks Commissioner, Mitchell oversees management, planning and operations of over 30,000 acres of parkland, which includes parks, playgrounds, beaches, marinas, recreation centers, and wilderness areas. He received a BA in Architecture from Pratt Institute and a Master's in Urban Planning from Hunter College in NYC.

Nancy Prince, ASLA

Chief of Landscape Architecture
New York City Department of Parks & Recreation

Nancy is Chief of Landscape Architecture at NYC Parks. Drawing from over 25 years of experience designing innovative, enduring, accessible and resilient parks, she establishes the standards and vision that guide consultants and design staff (including over 100 landscape architects) in the delivery of a large and varied portfolio of projects. Her work has been featured in national publications and has won local and national awards. Nancy holds a Masters in Urban Design from the City University Graduate Center, a Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts, and a BA in Urban Studies from Concordia University in Montreal.

Christian Zimmerman, FASLA

VP of Capital & Landscape Management
Prospect Park Alliance

As Vice President, Christian oversees day-to-day operations for all capital work and landscape management, leading a team of architects, landscape architects, horticulturists, arborists, and environmentalists who work with the City, community organizations, and user groups to balance the needs and demands of historic preservation, natural resources, and park maintenance.
His unique knowledge and skills have re-created the timeless original Olmsted design and embraced creative new uses and modern innovation. In his 28 years of shaping the Park, he has drawn on the talents of a wide range of collaborators and Alliance staff to bring the best to the Park revitalization.
