The burgeoning children and nature movement has resulted in requests for professional services in implementing nature play areas. However, designers may hesitate because of professional liability concerns. The panel will present evidence supporting nature play and share insights into designing, implementing, and managing a range of nature play models.

Brad McCauley is the Managing Principal at site, who oversees the day-to-day operations of the firm, and specializes in construction detailing and contract documentation. Through Brad’s extensive knowledge in transforming design into buildable projects, he has helped facilitate numerous award-winning public spaces. Brad is actively involved in a number of professional and service organizations, including serving as the Trustee of the American Society of Landscape Architects Illinois Chapter and a member of the Stewardship Council of The Cultural Landscape Foundation. A licensed landscape architect, Brad has also received Construction Document Technology certification from the Construction Specification Institute.

Robin C. Moore, Hon. ASLA

Professor of Landscape Architecture, Director
North Carolina State University Natural Learning Initiatives

Robin Moore, Hon. ASLA, is Professor of Landscape Architecture and co-founder, Natural Learning Initiative (NLI), NC State University. He holds degrees in architecture (London) and city planning (MIT). Since 2000, he has guided NLI’s interdisciplinary, community engagement in built environment design and action research for children and families in underserved communities. Moore is an international authority on the intergenerational design of urban play and learning environments, and consultant to governmental and nonprofit organizations and leading design firms. He is former chair of the Environmental Design Research Association. Publications include “Design for Healthy Childhoods and a Healthy Planet,” in Biophilic Design.

Hana Ishikawa is the Design Principal at site, often leading the design process with complex, yet thoughtful ideas. Constantly looking for visually enticing environments from the rigid structure of classical aesthetics to cutting-edge modern design, whether it is conceptual design or construction details, she enjoys merging innovation and logic into all aspects of design. Born into a family of designers in Tokyo, with her unique educational history and eclectic job history at many different types of firms, her experience is diverse. Hana was recently named Young Architect honorable mention from The Architect’s Newspaper for the 2017 Best of Design Awards.

Eric Singer is a construction lawyer concentrating in contracts, insurance and counseling for construction and design projects, as well as disputes concerning real estate and construction. Eric represents a variety of design professionals, contractors, owners and lenders and others involved in development, improvement and use of real estate. Mr. Singer attended the University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign and the University of Chicago Law School. He is a Member of the ABA Forum on Construction Law, the Society of Illinois Construction Attorneys. the ISBA Construction Section, and is an Affiliate Member of AIA, AIA Chicago and AIA NEI.
