As the twin trajectories of rapid urbanization and increased environmental risk collide, planners and designers need to lead efforts to build urban resilience. This panel explores bridging top-down and bottom-up processes to drive social equity through resilience planning in three case study communities: Manila, Philippines; Kibera, Kenya; and Memphis, Tennessee.

Laura is a landscape architect practicing in Sasaki’s urban and campus studios. She has a particular interest in the design of urban public spaces through an engaged public process and the issues of social and environmental justice in the landscape. Her work at Sasaki includes landscape design and planning for cities and campuses, with an emphasis on resiliency. Laura maintains a close connection to the academic community, and has taught in recent years at Northeastern University, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and the Rhode Island School of Design.

Mary Anne Ocampo

Lecturer in Urban Design
Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Mary Anne Ocampo is a Lecturer of Urban Design in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She practices as an urban designer and Principal at Sasaki, an interdisciplinary firm with an integrated planning and design philosophy. Mary Anne’s academic research focuses on a socio-ecological urban design approach to resilience. At MIT, she has initiated research focusing on informal settlements exposed to flooding in Metro Manila, collaborating with the World Bank on resiliency strategies that reduce vulnerability to flooding and urban development pressures. She serves as Chair of the board for the Hideo Sasaki Foundation.

Kounkuey Design Initiative

Jen is Design Director of KDI, a non profit community development and design practice based in Los Angeles, Nairobi and Stockholm. Trained in landscape architecture and planning, she has committed her career to advancing equity in places where good design is not often found. She provides the design vision for KDIs practice in the US and leads the built works with a focus on participatory process, constructability and project delivery. Her diverse project experience ranges from regional planning and park design to tactical urbanism, graphic identity, and public space management. She teaches, writes and lectures throughout the US.

Pippa W. Brashear, ASLA

Director of Planning and Resilience
SCAPE

Pippa is the Director of Planning and Resilience at SCAPE where she works with planners, engineers, ecologists and other designers to create landscapes that function as both habitat and infrastructure while enhancing people’s experience and understanding of their built and natural environment. She is currently managing the implementation of SCAPE’s Living Breakwaters project, an innovative coastal resilience project in New York City now in final design that was a winning proposal for HUD’s Rebuild by Design Competition. Pippa is also an instructor in the Urban Design Department at Columbia University and has taught studios at Rutgers University as well.
