FS-012 - Stewardship Philly Style: Design and Maintenance of William Penn’s City Squares

William Penn would likely be pleased with today's five public squares of his 1683 plan for Philadelphia, which continue as critical social and economic hubs. On this walking tour, attendees will hear from designers and stewards while experiencing the city's most iconic and enduring public spaces.

Linda is a registered landscape architect and a founding principal of TEND landscape inc. in Philadelphia. She has held positions at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, where she focused on the design and care of public landscapes and green stormwater infrastructure, and at traditional landscape architecture firms in the U.S. and abroad. With a background in horticulture, historic preservation, and design for private and public projects, Linda champions best practices in design, installation, and maintenance. She teaches and lectures at institutions in the Philadelphia region.

Julie earned an MLA from the University of Pennsylvania, is a certified arborist, accredited organic land care professional, and a founding principal of TEND landscape inc. Prior to forming TEND, Julie’s work focused on landscape management, developing her expertise over 14 years as project manager of high-profile public spaces in Philadelphia with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Julie is founder and co-chair of the Landscape Management Forum, a group of professionals from arboreta, public gardens and campuses throughout the Philadelphia region who share information, ideas, and best practices for managing the land under their purview.

Rob Armstrong is the Preservation and Capital Projects Manager at Philadelphia Parks & Recreation where he works on a variety of projects, including: trail projects, historic preservation and other capital projects. Rob has been with Parks & Recreation since 2005. Rob earned his Ph.D in American History from Lehigh University.

Friends of Rittenhouse Square

Renée Dubyk is the President of Friends of Rittenhouse Square. The Friends of Rittenhouse Square was created in 1976 to address the increasing gap between available city funding and the maintenance needs of Rittenhouse Square. With a mission to “preserve, protect, and beautify” the park, the Friends work in a public-private partnership with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. The Friends fund and manage many programs and projects needed to sustain the Square. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Friends provide funding through membership, special events, private donations, sponsorships, and capital campaigns.

John is an ISA Certified Arborist, TCIA’s Certified TreeCare Safety Professional with a bachelor's degree in Urban Studies & City Planning from University of Maryland. Joining Bartlett Tree Experts in 1998, John is currently an Arborist Representative, caring for trees at Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College, Comcast Center and Philadelphia Airport.. He also works with area parks including; Fitler Square, Rittenhouse Square, Arch Street Meeting House, Girard Fountain Park, Race Street Pier, Kahn Park and Schuylkill River Park. Serving as a PHS Tree Tender, John teaches their training sessions and is known for his presentations at the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Steve Gansz studied and earned a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture at PA State University. He is ISA Arborist and NOFA certified. He founded All Seasons LAndscaping in 1983 which has forty employees. All Seasons participates in numerous projects involving organic landcare and green infrastructure with clients such as PA Horticulture Society, PA State Highway, Delware State Highway and the City of Philadelphia.
