This session documents the transformation of a distressed public housing project into a town center. The open spaces are designed to reflect sustainability with style, with contemporary landscape elements that are ecologically effective. The SITES tool is a basis of design and is a driver of the placemaking elements.

Dennis Carmichael, FASLA, LEED AP, is a principal at Parker Rodriguez and has over 40 years of award-winning projects that include parks, waterfronts, and urban plazas. He uses a narrative approach to landscape design to capture the unique qualities of place in landscape materials. Projects under his direction have earned LEED Silver, Gold, and Platinum ratings. The Suitland project is tracking towards SITES certification. His work has been published in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, and Urban Land magazines. In 2006, he served as president of ASLA. In 2009, he served as president of LAF.

He currently, leads the Towne Square at Suitland Federal Center development project which is a $450 Million mixed use redevelopment project located in Prince Georges County Maryland.

Kelly Fleming, ASLA, SITES AP, is a registered landscape architect with over 15 years experience. She has a masters of Landscape Architecture and a Masters of Design Studies with a concentration in urbanism and ecology from the GSD at Harvard University. She employs critical thinking to the various challenges in implementing green infrastructure and low impact development to combat the environmental and sustainability challenges faced by the region. Kelly seeks to integrate thoughtful design with emerging practices grounded in research and technology to support the ecosystems that support us.
