In the age of dwindling maintenance departments and budget cuts, outdoor spaces can become environments of bland material palettes, fixed site furnishings, and excessive hardscape. This session will explore altered material choices to fit requirements/maintenance regimens while continuing to support the overall design intent.

As firm President and co-founder, Joan Floura, serves as Principal-in-Charge on many of the firm’s projects. During the course of her career she has worked with a wide variety of public and private clients on urban design, institutional, and transportation projects. The focus of Ms. Floura’s professional career has been streetscape, transportation and environmental landscape design projects. She has designed bioretention facilities/planting and has knowledge of native plant materials from the mid-Atlantic region and streetscapes implementing the process of Context Sensitive Design/Solutions. Ms. Floura has design build experience on transit and transporation projects, post design services and sustainable design solutions.

Timothy P. Devlin, ASLA

Landscape Architect
Gruen Associates

Tim Devlin is a Registered Landscape Architect at Gruen Associates. His experience brings familiarity with a wide range of design-led project types including transportation systems, outdoor amenity spaces, green roofs, higher education, mixed-use development, streetscape renovations, and US Embassy design. Throughout his professional practice, he has been part of collaborative project teams with work across the United States for both public and private sectors. He is passionate about cross-disciplinary collaboration to achieve integrated site designs while unearthing hidden opportunities. He received his Bachelor’s of Landscape Architecture from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in 2011.

Francine Katz, ASLA

APE Studio Inc.

Francine Katz, RLA, has dedicated her career to implementing strategic outreach and design focused on sustainability and collaboration. She consults for municipalities and individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area. Previously, she served as the Project Manager for a New York City-based landscape architecture firm, where she managed design and construction for The Trust for Public Land's New York City Playgrounds Program. Working with public school students, staff, and community members, she helped to facilitate the collective design process that resulted in high-functioning urban green spaces. Francine received her Bachelor’s of Landscape Architecture from the University of Maryland in 2011.
