We have addressed stormwater quality, but what about air quality? Through this session, panelists will present research and built projects to show how to begin to approach this problem that negatively impacts the public health of the most disadvantaged populations in this country and worldwide through landscape design tactics.

Jim is a landscape architect and urban designer whose passion for place-making and positive urban change drives his work in meeting the needs of WRT’s clients. Jim’s 35+ years of experience has spanned the full spectrum from large scale planning assignments to detailed design and implementation projects. Jim has extensive experience in designing urban districts, public space, and campuses on projects rooted in community engagement. Jim’s work is distinguished by its contribution to strengthening the social and ecological elements of place. As design Principal in WRT’s San Francisco office, Jim oversees landscape architecture and urban design projects in that office.

Hyphae Design Laboratory

Brent founded Hyphae Design Laboratory in 2008 to focus on innovative ecological engineering and green infrastructure. His expertise includes design of institutional, municipal, commercial, residential-scale living roofs, low-impact stormwater projects, ecological landscapes, and rainwater, graywater and ecological wastewater treatment systems. Brent is a co-founder of Urban Biofilter, an Oakland-based green infrastructure non-profit whose work focuses on designing and advocating for innovative approaches to bioremediation of air, water and soil in communities with severe environmental injustice. Urban Biofilter is working with the EPA on a Superfund site cleanup and a green infrastructure masterplan for the redevelopment of the Oakland Army Base.

Kurt Culbertson, FASLA

Design Workshop

Kurt Culbertson is Chairman, CEO at Design Workshop. He leads the field in evidence-based design and the application of performance measurement to landscape architecture, urban design and planning projects. His cutting-edge approach which addresses not only environmental performance but the community and economic performance of the built environment, has been highlighted in numerous publications. His work has been recognized through professional awards by the American Planning Association and the American Society of Landscape Architects. He is an ASLA fellow, member of AICP, recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship, fellow of Dumbarton Oaks, and fellow of the Institute of Urban Design.

Kounkuey Design Initiative

Scott is a Landscape Design Associate at Kounkuey Design Initiative in Los Angeles, California. He received a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from Yale University, and a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Virginia. While at UVa, Scott received an ASLA Honor Award for his work on socio-ecological solutions to the fallow land of New Orleans, an ASLA Honor Award for his work on The White House Kitchen Garden for client First Lady Michelle Obama, and the Howland Traveling Fellowship to study the landscape systems of domestic entrepreneurship and urban agriculture in Havana, Cuba
