Imagine a city where unused spaces are filled with colorful wild plants that don’t require horticultural attention. This session will give you the understanding and tools to build novel urban planting systems for the future. We will open the door to an inspiring vision for creating and managing urban green.

Jack Ahern is a professor of landscape architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research and teaching focuses on the application of urban landscape ecology theory for cities to build landscape performance and resilience capacity. His recent publications advance theory on applied urban ecology, supported by case studies and precedents from professional practices in the US, Europe and Asia. He is currently focusing on new theories of “novel urban ecosystems” to better understand how “new nature” in contemporary cities can be understood, classified, designed and managed for beauty and ecological functions.

David Seiter is design director and founding principal of Future Green Studio - a design-build firm specializing in landscape urbanism and ecology. David's portfolio encompasses award-winning private and public-use projects. His work was nationally recognized with the 2018 Emerging Voices Award by the Architectural League of NY. He is author of Spontaneous Urban Plants: Weeds in NYC - about the overlooked ecological value of weeds in the urban landscape. His research into urban adapted plants won a 2015 National Honor Award in Research from ASLA. David holds a MLA from the University of Pennsylvania and is a licensed Landscape Architect.

Claudia West is a principal at Phyto Studio and a leading voice in the emerging field of ecological planting design. Known for her passionate advocacy of plant-driven design, Claudia is a widely sought out speaker and consultant who applies the technologies of plant systems to bring essential natural functions back into our cities. She has worked on all sides of the green industry-as a designer, grower, installer, and land manager-grounding her innovative work in pragmatic solutions that address the realities of our urbanizing world. She is the co-author of the critically acclaimed book, Planting in a Post-Wild World (Timber Press).
