Cities are experiencing their rivers as a threat because of flooding, pollution, and land subsidence. Urban nature-based solutions, however, help ensure that water is a competitive advantage. This session offers insight into challenges, successes, and failures of landscape interventions aimed at flood protection in the city of Rotterdam.

Han Dijk

Posad Spatial Strategies

Han Dijk is founding partner at Posad Spatial Strategies. He lectures in urban design at the Academy of Architecture in Rotterdam and is guest lecturer in the Netherlands and abroad. Han is an experienced spatial designer in complex projects with a large amount of stakeholders, often in a political context.
He works on large planning assignments with an (inter)national context. where transitions of cities, water, mobility and energy played an important role. Clients range from ministries, major cities like Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Sao Paulo and institutions like UN habitat.

Tim van de Staaij

Municipality of Rotterdam

Tim van de Staaij is project manager at the Municipality of Rotterdam. With a background in water management, he closely works at both the Resilience Program and the Cleantech cluster at the municipality. Within the resilience program he supports both the program development, as well as project implementation. From time to time he lectures at the University Of Applied Science Of Rotterdam. In his role as program manager at the Wetskills Foundation, Tim often organizes two-week pressure cookers for students and young professionals abroad.

Gerda Roeleveld

Expert advisor spatial planning

Gerda Roeleveld is an expert advisor at Deltares, independent institute for applied research in the field of water and subsurface, The Netherlands. Trained as a landscape architect, Gerda worked for over 20 years as spatial planner and policy maker for the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment in The Netherlands. She was an invited expert for the European Commission and the OECD on assignments in Europe and Asia. At Deltares she is currently working on methods and tools to improve knowledge exchange amongst designers, scientists, decision makers and stakeholders in participatory processes aimed at climate adaptation.
