FS-015 - Chanticleer: Public Garden and Proving Ground for Extraordinary Garden Design

Once the Rosengarten home (1912–1990), Chanticleer opened to the public in 1993. Since then, it has evolved remarkably into a contemporary garden within a historic setting. Attendees will explore a newly designed accessible walkway, a stormwater management project involving daylighting a creek, and the built ruin garden.

Mr. Alderson’s past work includes the creation of an 86-acre Meadow Garden for Longwood Gardens, including bridges, boardwalks and pavilions; the design of an elevated walkway for Chanticleer; the development of an ecological stewardship plan for the University of Pennsylvania; and the designs for Healing Gardens and Landscapes at Lancaster General Health Cancer Center and an acre meadow roof garden at Reading Hospital. Mr. Alderson’s firm is currently working on a 52-acre expansion to Dow Gardens in Midland, Michigan including a canopy walk, a history of the apple orchard, two bridges and a 6-acre stream restoration.

Teddy Pickering, Student ASLA

Teddy is a current Landscape Architect student at Philadelphia University, and former Intern at Chanticleer. Previously, Teddy worked as supervisor of GreenWeaver Landscapes, 1st Ranger Battalion, and Rutgers University Gardens. Teddy is an overall admirer of the world’s natural systems and what designers can do to emulate them.

R. William Thomas

Executive Director and Head Gardener
Chanticleer

Bill has been Chanticleer’s Executive Director since 2003 and was previously at Longwood Gardens. Bill leads the talented and creative Chanticleer staff in its continued development of the young garden, now in its 25th year. He emphasizes an environmentally sensitive, multi-century approach, and is unifying the property into one cohesive garden. The staff and he co-authored the award-winning book The Art of Gardening. Bill chairs Greater Philadelphia Gardens and holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Ornamental Horticulture from the University of Wisconsin. He received the Scott Medal and Award 2017 and the AHS Professional Award in 2016.

Mara Baird, ASLA

Landscape Architect
ML BAIRD & CO

Mara began work with Chanticleer in 1990, as project landscape architect both for the master plan and the design and construction of the garden’s entry and parking features. Subsequent work included the Chanticleer House Water Feature, Chanticleer House Terrace and Overlook, The Ruin, and a ten-year update to the original master plan. Founded in 2002, ML BAIRD & CO maintains a focus on design for academic and horticultural institutions. Notable projects have included the Science Center at Swarthmore College, a recent master plan for PHS Meadowbrook Farm, and an award-winning entry with Cabrini College at the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Przemek Walczak

Horticulturist
Chanticleer

Przemek has been a horticulturist at Chanticleer since 1996. Przemek started his career in horticulture as a dendrologist at The Center for the Preservation of Historic Landscapes in Poland. After relocating to the United States, he studied arboriculture at the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a M.S. in Agriculture and Economics from the University of Live Sciences in Warsaw Poland. In addition to gardening, Przemek also designs and builds water features, bridges, railings, fences, and garden furniture.
