FS-014 - Like a Local: Life in the Streets and Gardens of Philadelphia

Experience urban residential gardens and streetscapes of different time periods, ranging from 18th century to current time. Small alley streets, greenways and wider residential historic streets will be explored en route to a variety of gardens, including the historic Physick House Garden, a contemporary garden on Pine Street, Philadelphia's Magic Garden, and Talula's Restaurant Garden

Susan M Mattison, Landscape Architecture & Planning

Susan Mattison, Landscape Architect and Planner, has project expertise on urban open spaces and plazas, streetscapes, historic preservation, campus design, and sustainable greening projects. She coordinated a planting renovation plan for the Physick Garden, featured in this Field Session. LEED certified projects in her practice have included urban housing projects in the metropolitan area. She has been adjunct faculty in Landscape Architecture at Philadelphia University (Thomas Jefferson University), for a variety of courses including urban design and cultural landscapes. She lives and works in south Philadelphia and has conducted student sessions on Philadelphia's unique streets and urban spaces.

Landscape Forms

Amy is Landscape Forms’ business development representative in the greater Philadelphia area. A Philly local for over a decade, she loves to explore the city. Prior to joining LFI, she worked as a designer and project manager at landscape architecture and urban design firms. She studied landscape architecture at Temple University, where she has also been an instructor and guest juror. Her design work has garnered numerous awards, including a national ASLA Award of Excellence and Honor Award. Amy’s experience creating engaging, relevant spaces and her appreciation for great collaborations make her a valuable asset to her clients.

Nicole Juday Rhoads

Pennsylvania Horticultural Society

Nicole Juday Rhoads has worked in the horticulture profession for more than a decade. Her love of roses began as Landscape Curator at Wyck, the oldest rose garden in the country. Her horticultural education continued as Education Manager of the Barnes Arboretum School in Merion, PA and as Project Manager for Greater Philadelphia Gardens. In 2016, she came to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society as the Director of Engagement, where she works with gardeners, volunteers, garden clubs, and donors. She serves on the board of Awbury Arboretum and is a passionate backyard gardener at her home in Germantown, where she collects antique plants and roses.

Olivia Edlund

Education & Outreach Manager
Philadelphia's Magic Gardens

Olivia Edlund is the Education and Outreach Manager at Philadelphia's Magic Gardens. She earned her MA in Museum Education from the University of the Arts where her thesis, "Using Biography in Interpretive Practices in Single-Artist Museums", included research about Philadelphia's Magic Gardens. Edlund also graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Communications from Elizabethtown College. She previously worked at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Valley Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau and also held positions at Fleisher Art Memorial, Mural Arts Philadelphia, and the Wharton Esherick Museum.

Six years ago, I was able to redirect my life, via transitioning from my decades long career in marketing, following a Wharton MBA, to my passion - horticulture. After years of gardening, becoming a Master Gardener, graduating from the Barnes Foundation 3 Year Horticultural Program and taking many other classes I was asked to join Awbury Arboretum Landscapes as their Executive Director.

This gave me the opportunity to work with many clients designing and installing their gardens. Following these 3 years of experience, I launched City Garden Guru in 2015, so that I could do the same for others.

Michael graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and has worked at Groundswell for six years. His keen graphic eye and unprecedented computer graphic/modeling skills make him a key member of the Groundswell team. Notable projects include La Peg at FringeArts, Independence Beer Garden, and Hangar 1 Vodka.
