FS-016 - Snap into It: Photographing Urban Parks and Gardens in Philadelphia

Designers and photography enthusiasts work with professionals in the field to enhance the way they capture images of landscapes. This walking field session follows projects along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and includes hands-on instruction for photographing the urban realm. Images from session participants will be displayed in ASLA Central.

Marion Brenner Photography

Marion Brenner’s photographs of landscape design have appeared internationally in magazines, including Gardens Illustrated, T, Landscape Architecture, and Garden Design. Books of her photographs include Private Gardens of the Bay Area, Outstanding American Gardens, The Bold Dry Garden, New Garden Design, Living Land, and In and Out of Paris. She has received a grant from the Graham Foundation to photograph eighteenth century Jardins Anglais in France. Her photographs are in the collections of the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Berkeley Art Museum. She lives in Berkeley, California.

Sahar Coston-Hardy, Affil. ASLA

Sahar Coston-Hardy Photography

Sahar Coston-Hardy is a fine art and landscape architecture photographer focused on the social structure of race and cultural identity. Integrating portraiture, urban design, and street photography, her work investigates the relationship between place, power, and personhood. A graduate of Tyler School of Art, she is currently working on a collaborative project, documenting historically significant structures and spaces by examining the landscape of resilience and struggle. Sahar is a continuing contributor to Landscape Architecture Magazine, with work published in The Architect's Newspaper and TOPOS Magazine. After eight years as the staff photographer for OLIN, Sahar opened her practice in 2016.

Laurie D. Olin, FASLA

OLIN

Laurie Olin is a distinguished teacher, author, and one of the most renowned landscape architects practicing today. He has helped shape the legacy of his namesake firm OLIN through the design of timeless public spaces which celebrate social equity, natural systems, and urban life, including signature projects like Bryant Park in New York, the Washington Monument Grounds on the National Mall, and the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. He is a Guggenheim Fellow and the recipient of the National Building Museum's Vincent Scully Prize, the Olana Foundation's Frederic Church Award, and the National Medal of Arts, bestowed by President Barack Obama.

Chris McGee

Art Director of Landscape Architecture Magazine
American Society of Landscape Architects

Chris McGee has been the art director of Landscape Architecture Magazine (LAM) since 2008. Chris was also the magazine's design associate from 1995 to 1998. He served as art director for two Economist Group publications in Washington, D.C., and spent four years in Chicago where he was art director of a number of healthcare publications in both Chicago and Milwaukee.
