SCAPE reconceives urban landscape design as an activist practice and has driven dynamic processes integrating science, design, engineering, and social life to address the epoch of climate change at multiple scales. The office couples ideas-driven research with pilot projects, experimentation, built works, and publications to influence the conception and agency of landscape architecture.

Kate Orff, ASLA

Founder and Principal

Kate is a registered landscape architect focused on retooling design practice to anticipate climate change and to foster social life. As the founding Principal of SCAPE, she advances the firm’s goals through publications, lectures, research, and project work and is known for leading complex, creative, and collaborative work processes that advance broad environmental and social prerogatives. Kate is also the Director of Columbia University's Urban Design Program. She received a 2017 MacArthur Fellowship.

Alexis Landes, ASLA

Managing Principal

Alexis is a landscape architect, urban planner, and project manager. As the Managing Principal at SCAPE, she works directly with clients to understand their needs, and then develop project teams and operational strategies that lead to exceptional results. She was the project manager for the Hudson River RBD project with Dewberry and OMA and is also an adjunct faculty member at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she serves as a design critic and teaches a seminar on contemporary landscape practice.

Gena Wirth, ASLA

Design Principal

Gena is the Design Principal at SCAPE. Trained in landscape architecture, urban planning and horticulture, Gena draws from her interdisciplinary training to create ecologically rich and culturally relevant landscapes from the infrastructural scale to the site level. Gena leads the design on several significant projects in the office. She was the Project Manager for SCAPE’s winning Rebuild By Design proposal, Living Breakwaters, and worked on the publication of both Toward an Urban Ecology and Petrochemical America.
