WS-004 - Digital Methods: Water + Dynamic Natural Systems of the Delaware Riverfront

The workshop will introduce an array of digital tools from generative modeling, watershed mapping, 3D scanning, and live construction documentation. Participants will be introduced to these tools as they develop representations and generative models of issues within the Delaware River watershed and construction of engineered and natural systems worldwide.

Participants will be required to have the latest versions of Rhinoceros 3D, Grasshopper, Autodesk ReCAP Pro, and ESRI ArcGIS Pro installed on their laptops (Windows).

$125 per person by 6/29; $150 by 9/14; $175 after 9/14

Bradley Cantrell, ASLA

Chair and Professor in Landscape Architecture

Bradley Cantrell is a landscape architect and scholar whose work focuses on the role of computation and media in environmental and ecological design. Professor Cantrell received his BSLA from the University of Kentucky and his MLA from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is currently an Associate Professor of Landscape Architectural Technology and a researcher in the Responsive Environments and Artifacts Lab at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. His work points to a series of methodologies that develop modes of modeling, simulation, and embedded computation that express and engage the complexity of overlapping physical, cultural, and economic systems.

Adam R. Mekies, ASLA

Landscape Architect & Planner
Design Workshop

Adam Mekies is a landscape architect and planner at Design Workshop in Aspen, Colorado. Adam received his BSLA from Iowa State University, and is the recipient of several ASLA design and research awards for his work in computational construction methodologies and design implementation of parametric technologies.

As a former design and construction technologies consultant, he has spent years advancing the application of 3D technology beyond imagery, to further the spatial and interactive potential of landscape architecture’s design modeling systems. He is the recent co-author of the book Codify: Parametric and Computational Design in Landscape Architecture published in 2018.

Xun Liu

NYC Department of City Planning

Xun Liu is a landscape designer at Stoss in Boston,MA. She received MLA with Jacob Weidenmann Prize from Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2017, and BArch with distinction from Tongji University in 2015. She worked as Irving Innovation Fellow at Harvard after graduation, focusing on developing a methodology of integrating computational fluid dynamics simulation and modeling into design process in studios. She is interested in exploring the capacities for digital media to understand spatial design issues, to communicate the temporal aspect of landscape architecture, and to contribute to the development in the field of landscape.

As a recent graduate of the MLA II program at Harvard University’s GSD, John concentrates his work on the variable layers and scales embedded in cultural and ecological needs of urban landscapes. After completing two urban design / landscape architecture studios focused on large scale mobility issues in Jakarta, Indonesia and Buenos Aires, Argentina, John finished his graduate studies with his design thesis which examines the utility of brownfields in the context of recovering Rust-Belt cities. Since joining HOK’s planning group in Washington, D.C., John has contributed to the design and planning of projects in both the U.S. and abroad.
