This session was proudly submitted as a joint session with Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise: Radiation Oncology (IHE-RO) and RO-ILS: Radiation Oncology Incident Learning System. IHE-RO efforts have been driven by the desire and need to improve patient safety in the highly complex and increasingly technology driven field of radiation oncology. RO-ILS collects in aggregate errors across the field to provide a learning opportunity about mistakes and their root causes. IHE-RO is a nonprofit organization which fosters vendor-agnostic strategies to improve interoperability of technology to reduce error in radiation oncology practice. Through IHE-RO, cross-platform standards of data communication between treatment planning and treatment delivery systems are designed to minimize risk of human error. Despite effects by both entities to promote information about improvements in safety initiatives, greater dissemination of both common mistakes and the solutions developed through the IHE-RO process is needed to allow greater awareness of available resources to improve patient safety. This session will review the types of errors reported in RO-ILS, focusing on technology related problems, and then highlight available solutions developed through IHE-RO using example cases with interoperability solutions available in routine practice. Cases from RO-ILS will be presented followed by solutions available from IHE-RO. As IHE-RO solution are vendor agnostic, no specific vendors will be described in either case or solution. Faculty include a physicist and physician representative each from RO-ILS and IHE-RO.
- Assess new technologies and determine any interoperability gaps that might exist between current and new clinical technology.
- Identify key interoperability data exchanges and how standards implementations can increase patient safety.
- Determine gaps in current clinical practice that would benefit from new standards and implementations.
