This session will review the recommendations from the new ASTRO guidelines on hypofractionated radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer and on the role of radiation in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. First, it will discuss the conclusions of the hypofractionated RT for prostate cancer guideline, which compared moderately and ultrahypofractionated regimens to conventionally fractionated ones in terms of prostate cancer control, toxicity and quality of life. The guideline also provides recommendations regarding dose-fractionation for hypofractionation and looks at technical issues, such as normal tissue dose constraints, treatment volumes and use of image-guided and intensity-modulated radiation therapy. In addition, the session will introduce the recommendations of the new guideline on pancreatic cancer on appropriate indications, dose, target volumes and sequencing with chemotherapy for both conventional fractionation and stereotactic body radiation therapy. It will also consider technical aspect of radiation delivery for pancreatic cancer and use of prophylactic medications to mitigate toxicity. Finally, this session will briefly describe the process by which ASTRO clinical practice statements are developed.
