This session will address the practical issues surrounding breast radiation therapy regarding issues currently in the literature.
Breast conservation therapy, especially the topics of hypofractionation, the treatment of DCIS, the volume to treat for conservation therapy (partial versus whole breast) and techniques and planning will be discussed.
Post-mastectomy techniques will be touched upon. Topics will include fractionation with standard versus hypofractionation and how this impacts of the incidence of brachial plexopathy and arm edema.
At the end of the session ASTRO's new whole breast radiotherapy guidelines will be discussed.
The session will conclude with a few moments for questions and answers from the participants for our panel of experts in breast radiation therapy.
- Explain the issues surrounding the use of hypofractionation of breast radiation therapy. The attendee should be able to discuss various topics such as size, age and DCIS as well as the dose guidelines after this session.
- Discuss the treatment of DCIS breast cancer and how to use Van Nuys guidelines, Oncotype DX, Pam 50, and Mammaprint to determine when to treat DCIS.
- ASTRO is recommending guidelines in the treatment of whole breast radiation therapy. These guidelines are changing how and who we treat, and the attendee will be able to discuss the issues around these important guidelines.
