Recent advances in radiation therapy techniques and the success of new systemic therapies, such as targeted agents and immunotherapy, have improved outcomes for many patients with lung cancer. This session will review SBRT as a treatment option for patients with operable and medically inoperable early stage lung cancer and discuss the recent data comparing lobectomy and wedge reception to SBRT and outcomes after SBRT. It will also review the current state of knowledge on neoadjuvant therapy for lung cancer and combining systemic agents, including chemotherapy, targeted agents and immunotherapy, with definitive conventional and hypofractionated radiation for NSCLC and SCLC. The faculty will also discuss ongoing and proposed studies on this topic. Following the session, attendees should be able to improve their knowledge about patient selection for SBRT and surgery and discuss how systemic therapies can affect radiation planning and treatment, toxicities and cancer outcomes, and to apply this knowledge when evaluating treatment options and making treatment decisions for their patients.
