Head and Neck Cancer

EDU 26 - (INTERACTIVE) Oropharynx Tumor Board: Multidisciplinary Case-Based Discussions of Modern Oropharynx Cancer Treatment

10/23/2018
2:45 PM - 4:15 PM
Location: Room 008

Session Type: Educational

In this session, a multiinstitutional multidisciplinary panel will enact a case-based tumor board to discuss a variety of patients with newly diagnosed oropharynx cancer (so-called "bread and butter" cases that prove challenging in day-to-day practice). Our panel will include a head and neck surgeon (specializing in TORS), a head and neck medical oncologist (with interest in new agents and immunotherapy), a speech pathologist (with experience in functional "prehabilitation" and rehabilitation of patients undergoing radiation therapy and/or TORS), two head and neck radiation oncologists (with commitments to evidence-based practice and two capture practice variation), and one moderator to design the cases and foment the discussion.

We will discuss guidelines for evaluation, use of the AJCC 8 staging (and how to translate prior studies into this language), and focus on multidisciplinary management of each case. For each case, we will discuss when to use surgery, what is the best dose/target/technique for patients with early- and late-stage disease, what is the best concurrent regimen, how to diagnose a p16-positive oropharynx cancer of unknown primary, and what are the functional and survival outcomes of these decisions. In addition, we will focus on discussing clinical trials applicable to these scenarios (current, future, or waiting for results).

Overall, this panel is carefully selected as a group of highly recognized, thoughtful experts with opinions on best management. It will serve not only as an interactive case discussion but also as a model for a productive tumor board discussion (and ways to have discussions about complex patients).
