006IC - Global Perspectives in Urethral Reconstruction

Patients with urethral stricture disease require a comprehensive and technically complex series of strategies to address the problems of poor tissue vascularization, spongiofibrosis; comorbid medical conditions; deficiencies in genital skin; and the unfortunate effects of repeated dilations or urethotomies. This course is designed to provide an overview of the surgical management of urethral stricture disease relevant to the diverse spectrum of cases encountered across the developing and developed world. We use audience interaction and video presentations as a tool to focus on enunciating key decision making in urethral reconstructive surgery.

Hunter Wessells is Professor and Nelson Chair of the Department of Urology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Wessells specializes in genitourinary trauma, reconstructive surgery, and erectile dysfunction. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Georgetown University and urology residency training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. After completing a fellowship in Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery and Trauma at UCSF, Dr. Wessells was a member of the faculty at the University of Arizona from 1995 to 2000. He joined the Department of Urology at the University of Washington in 2001, serving as Chair since 2008.

Dr. Wessells is Program Director of a Fellowship in GU Trauma and Reconstruction based at Harborview Medical Center and a NIH T32 Training Grant in Benign Urology. He leads an NIH funded research program investigating the risk factors and genetic susceptibility to diabetes associated urological complications. His professional service includes the AUA Legislative Taskforce for Urotrauma, AUA Guidelines Panels for Urotrauma and Male Urethral Stricture, Chair of the NIDDK sponsored Urinary Stone Disease Research Network, and as a Trustee of the American Board of Urology.

Guido Barbagli

Guido Barbagli was born January 22, 1950, in Pieve Santo Stefano, Arezzo, Italy.
He attended Medical School and " and in 1979, Dr. Barbagli completed his internship in Urology. In October 1982, he obtained a Postgraduate Degree in Urology from the Urology Postgraduate Department of the University of Florence, Italy.
Dr. Barbagli is the Director of The Center for Reconstructive Urethral Surgery, which he founded in March 1999 in Arezzo, Italy and Scientific Director of the "Centro Chirurgico Toscano" Hospital, in Arezzo, Italy.
The scientific activity of Dr. Barbagli includes 150 articles edited in international scientific journals, 5 books on reconstructive urethral surgery and 6 chapters on books on reconstructive urology.
Dr. Barbagli is active member of the following societies: American Urological Association (AUA), European Association of Urology (EAU), Società Italiana di Urologia (SIU). Currently, Dr. Barbagli acts as a referee for the numerous scientific journals. Dr. Barbagli has been a participant and invited keynote speaker to numerous International Meetings and Congresses.
Dr. Barbagli has been appointed President of "THE SOCIETY OF GENITOURINARY RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGEONS (GURS)", for the period 2008 - 2009.
Currently, Dr. Barbagli holds a position as a limited-term Professor at the Postgraduate School of Urology - Department of Urology - University Vita Salute-San Raffaele, Milan, Italy. From October 2011, Dr. Barbagli is the Director of the Educational "Live" Courses on Reconstructive Urethral Surgery by internet streaming. From May 2015, Dr. Barbagli was appointed as Visiting Professor, for three years, at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in Shanghai, China. From 2015, Dr. Barbagli was appointed as Permanent Professor at the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University in Moscow, Russia.

Dr. Sanjay Kulkarni is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in reconstructive urological surgeries especially urethral reconstruction. He underwent Urology training in England from 1981-86.He was trained by Mr Richard Turner Warwick.
Dr Kulkarni established Center for Reconstructive Urology in 1995.The center performs one of the largest number of genito-urinary reconstructive surgeries in the world.
Kulkarni School of Urethral Surgery: The center is engaged in permanent educational activities for urologists who are interested in the in-depth training in reconstructive urethral surgery.
He has conducted numerous live surgery workshops to teach and demonstrate urethral reconstructive surgeries in India and around the world especially in developing countries in Africa and Asia and Middle East.
Dr Kulkarni is Vice President of SIU (Society International de Urology).
Dr. Sanjay Kulkarni invented the new technique of one stage reconstruction of pan urethral stricture by one side dissection, penile invagination and dorsal onlay buccal mucosa graft urethroplasty. The "Kulkarni Technique" is popular around the world for the repair of pan urethral strictures and has led him into teaching courses at AUA, SIU, USI and international meetings.
His new technique of "Laparoscopic Omentoplasty to support anastomotic urethroplasty in complex and redo pelvic fracture urethral defects" is also useful for recto-urethral fistulas.
He has authored many publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has co-authored book with Dr.Guido Barbagli " Art Of Urethral Reconstruction".
Awards
The Urology Society of India awarded "Urology Gold Medal" for his outstanding contribution to Urology in India.
"President's Medal" by the Indian American Urology Association in 2017.
Dr BC Roy award by the President of India in 2016 for developing subspeciality of GU Reconstruction in India.It is the highest award given by Govt of India for a doctor.
