038IC - Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma: Endourological Management & Topical Therapy

This comprehensive instructional course covers all aspects of endourological management of upper tract urothelial carcinoma including diagnosis, biopsy techniques, the latest endoscopes, indications and patient selection, the latest techniques and modalities for ablation/resection (endoscopic and percutaneous) including lasers and bipolar energy, the latest technologies for diagnosis, grading, and staging (including NBI, blue light, PDD, and confocal microscopy), limitations and complications of endourological management, surveillance regimens, indications, methodology, delivery systems, and results and complications of adjuvant topical immuno- and chemo-therapy. The faculty have been carefully selected as they are leaders in the field and have developed the latest techniques and technologies. This course is of interest to all practicing urologists and will provide all the necessary didactic material and surgical instruction for urologists to implement the knowledge and techniques learned to their own practice.

Dr. Mantu Gupta is Professor of Urology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Chair of Urology at Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospitals, Director of Endourology and Stone Disease for the Mount Sinai Health System, and Director of the Mount Sinai Kidney Stone Center. 

Dr. Gupta is recognized as a world leader in the research and treatment of urinary stone disease, ureteropelvic junction obstruction, urinary tract obstruction, and upper tract urothelial malignancies, having pioneered many of the techniques in current use. He is recognized as one of the leading endoscopic, percutaneous, and minimally invasive surgeons in the world, having performed over 10,000 major endourological procedures. Dr. Gupta is unique in that he employs a nurturing, compassionate, and holistic approach to the management of stone disease, utilizing alternative medical, nutritional and preventive strategies.

Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Gupta served as Director of Endourology and the Kidney Stone Center at Columbia University for 18 years. The recipient of numerous honors and awards, Dr. Gupta was given a Presidential Gold Medal by President Ronald Reagan for his academic achievements and has served as a visiting professor both within the United States and throughout the world. He is a frequent lecturer and moderator at national and international meetings and has published extensively in major peer-reviewed journals and authored numerous book chapters. Additionally, Dr. Gupta teaches surgical skills courses throughout the world and has served as editor and guest editor for numerous publications. Dr. Gupta was member of the prestigious Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University where he earned a combined BS-MD degree with distinction and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He did his Urology residency at the University of California, San Francisco and completed a fellowship in Endourology.

Jean de la Rosette

AMC University Hospital

Dr de la Rosette is Professor of Urology, at AMC University Hospital in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He completed his medical degree and urology residency at St Radboud University Hospital in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. His main fields of interest are minimal invasive surgery and endourology with a special focus on ablative treatments and urological ultrasound. Dr de la Rosette is a member of the committee on Minimal Invasive Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and the committee on Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial tumors of the ICUD. He is also co-chairman of the committee on Renal Stone Disease of the ICUD. He is past-chairman of the EAU Section of Uro-Technology (ESUT) and board member of the Society of Endourology. Dr. de la Rosette was a chairman of the European Association of Urology (EAU) working party on BPH guidelines. Dr de la Rosette is (co)author of over 700 peer-reviewed publications and has authored many book chapters. He is strongly committed to research and has been appointed as chairman of the CROES (Clinical Research Office of the Endourology Society). In SIU he holds the position of General Secretary

Joseph C. Liao

Stanford University

Joseph Liao is currently Associate Professor of Urology at Stanford University and Chief of Urology at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. He earned his A.B. in Biology from Harvard College in 1993 and M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1997. After completing his urology residency and fellowship in endourology/minimally invasive surgery at UCLA, he joined the Department of Urology at Stanford in 2006, where he is also a member of Bio-X interdisciplinary research program, Stanford Cancer Institute, and Institute for Immunity, Transplantation, and Infection. Dr. Liao is a surgeon-scientist who maintains an active clinical practice focusing on minimally invasive surgery and urologic oncology. His laboratory focuses on development and translation of optical molecular imaging for urological cancer and urine-based molecular diagnostics. Dr. Liao has pioneered the application of confocal endomicroscopy in the urinary tract, endoscopic molecular imaging of bladder cancer, an in vitro molecular diagnostics for urinary tract infections and bladder cancer. He has served as the principal investigator on several R01 grants from the National Institutes of Health, as well as a standing member of the NIH Instrument Systems Development study section. He is an author of over 100 manuscripts and the editor of the textbook Advances in Image-Guided Urologic Surgery. He has been an invited speaker to numerous international meetings including the Gordon Research Conferences, IEEE-NANOMED, IEEE-NEMS, SPIE, Society of Urologic Oncology, Endourology Society, American Urological Association, and European Association of Urology.
